Early in the Morning. . .

I did my own spin from the poem “Early in the Morning” by Li-Young Lee.  He’s a beautiful poet, so hope you enjoy my pracitce.

Early in the Morning

As my breathe weakens and my thoughts get heavy

I watch as he glides from on top of me and faints into his pillow

The ray of sunshine glistens on his chest

And the white sheets softens his grasp

Slowly he moves from my thoughts to the bathroom

My eyes begin to feel soft like the midnight clouds.

He stands erect, stands powerful

Every crevice and muscle outline our struggle and my admiration for

His Chocolate skin, mesmerizes

Makes our love feel everlasting to me.

Mirror image

I see my eyes gazing

Clutching the clouds

Our moist white sheets

Wishing he’d never leave,

Into the world where my

Darkest midnight,

Will not be able to breathe.

But as he holds my round cheek

Kiss my full ripened lips

Touches my tender breasts

Our minds meet

And our souls

Can finally breathe.

My Testimony

I’m listening.

Listening to the sounds of my body

No longer muting what I believe is discouraging

But letting God tell me what I need.

As I spread my wings to the golden sun

No more tears, blood, pain, or silence.

I will shout to the world,

“I am me, and this is who I’ve become.”

Scars will become beauty marks

Inspiration of where I’ve been and

What it took to be me.

You will now understand that my perfect skin comes from within.

From my hair follicles down to my toes

He lifts me up above the highest mountain top

With the wind as my melody

I will listen, shout, and tell the world.

I’m listening.

Time won’t run out like the sand of an hour glass

My body will no longer go silent

and my journey will unveil.

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This past monday, January 18th, 2010, was not just any old day off that was granted by my school but more of a reflection of new beginnings.  Many students, communities, and countries around the world celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  I had the opportunity to walk with my fellow classmates at Hampton University as we marched from our landmark, the Emancipation Oak to Ogden Hall for a ceremony.

The ceremony was put together by the Office of Student Activities, where the Pan-Hellenic Council sponsored the event.  Through prayer, musical selections, poems, and speeches we were all able to embrace such a beautiful moment.  Here I have captured some footage and compiled it into a contempary video so that you can share and remember the experiences of Martin Luther King Day 🙂

Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda

There has been a big uproar about the “Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009” recently that they are trying to prosecute Ugandans for practicing Homesexuality. Life imprisonment and death are said to be the consequences for being gay.  The likelyhood of this bill being passed after the 2011 Elections is at a high stake.

According to the Huffington Post nearly 95% of the population of Uganda are religious leaving me to believe that homosexuality is not of acceptance.   After reading many articles on the gay rights in Uganda my heart becomes weak to know that in worst cases homosexuality is not accepted worldwide.  In America, people are ridiculed, beaten, and stunned from their life everyday but to have a bill passed that will prosecute people because of their sexual orientation is very unmoral.

“One example of continuing discrimination came from Uganda, where President Yoweri Museveni ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to locate and arrest homosexuals in that nation.”

As an heterosexual/straight woman I do not know if I could relate to anyone that is gay, lesbian, or transgender, but I know that when it comes to Human Rights, Homosexuality, should be a right that is given to you and you should not have to fight for something about yourself that you have no control over.

Say a Prayer for Uganda.

Dreams Really Do Come True

I finally had a chance to help the box office numbers this past weekend, and went to see Disney’s “The Princess and The Frog”.  It was an amazing fairytale I’d must say the least.  With the setting and theme based in New Orleans my heart felt warm as disney animation told the story of a young black girl who worked for her dreams while stumbling upon love.  I don’t want to spoil everything for you because everyone from 0-150 should go out and support this black fairytale.

HU celebrates QueLuptuous

No, these aren’t the dancers off the Monique Show, but these are Hampton University’s very own QueLuptuous women and honey, they were working it!

Full figured women were not overlooked this year as the GE Chapter of Omega Psi Phi decided to create a Pagaent for full-figured women.  9 lovely ladies had the opportunity to showcase their beauty, talent, intelligence, and CURVES in hopes to becoming Miss QueLuptuous 2009.

A dear friend to me, Tara Haskin, Senior History Major, complimented her curvacious style with class.  She showcased her talent by playing the violin and telling the the audience “My curves dare to be different!”

I feel this event was much needed for this campus because many women are overlooked by the stereotypes that Hampton ONLY wants to portray.  You can be big and beautiful and hold a title and the Omegas made sure of that.  I give my props for allowing full-figured women to showcase their talent, beauty, and curves in such a way to be remembered.

Be Blessed to be Curvy Ladies 🙂

Give Thanks.

This year of 2009, I have many reasons to be thankful.  But the great gift that I’m thankful for is, Life.  This year has been a year of Life and Death.  Many were born but many have died.  I have become more appreciative of my life her on earth.  Taking care of my body and my soul is the focus because at any time God can take my life and that would be the end of it.  This past school year, I have experience two of my classmates in my class of 2010 that has gotten their life taken away from them.  It’s reasons that are only in God’s control; but I have accepted them and learned that God is trying to tell the world something when he takes someone out of your life.

God Give you Life and he takes it from you too. It’s to me, as his child to do the best that I can to live by God and follow him and understand that whatever he does to me is for a reason.

So, this thanksgiving my biggest thanks is for LIFE. What’s yours?

Febraury 2, 2010

How exciting! Corrine Bailey Rae has finally set a date to release her new ablum entitled  “The Sea” for February 2, 2010.  After her public grief from the loss of her husband in 2008, she went into hiding in the studio and tells us that she will be blessing us with acoustic melodies and beautiful sounds to our ears once again.  I absolutely loved her first album in 2007 and I can’t wait to cop it when it hits stores next year…to be continued 🙂
