Afro Chic’s Pick: Africa Fashion Week Designers

While viewing the previews for Africa Fashion Week (June 30- July 3 2010), I came across some African Designers that really match my fly.  Chichia London is a East African designer who grew up in London that designs pieces for the daring, baby doll, and edgy girls.  Her pieces range from tunics, dresses, cover ups, and swimwear. Her influences derive from her native land as well as London giving it a funky street feel that can hit runways all over.

Spero Villioti is a Greek and Italian South African (if that makes any sense) pretty much a really cool white guy that had some very elegant evening pieces that I wanted to share with you.  He is amazing in the sense of keeping the African feel but with a more modern and European look that we all wear today.

Last but not least my favorite, Gloria Wavawunno of Uganda.  She specializing in cocktail dresses and evening wear and I was the most excited with her because her clothes are so eclectic and different.  Using feather and unusual walk of nature i I had a millions bucks I’d be sure to put her pieces in my wardrobe.

Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk

It works! It works! Finally a Carol’s Daughter that I can say works for me.  Her products are usually really drying and boring on my hair but the “Hair Milk” line really does define my curls.  It comes in a Shampoo, Conditioner, and curl booster.  I want to know you guys review on this one because I think I might have found a favorite product from Carol’s Daughter. Pics coming soon!

If it’s not Corporate, it’s Six Flags?

Just when I thought the corporate world would be the underlying issues with natural hair I came across an article on www.thecoilreview.com that talks about Six Flags of America, the amusement park, might be facing a lawsuit over two natural hair women for their discriminatory policies.  Supposedly Janet Bello with locs, went to get an application for the Washington, D.C. location and asked them what would be the reason for not being hired and the manager stated that she would have to change her hairstyle.  Bello then went on and asked for a written policy on that matter, and there it was: no extreme hairstyles which listed “dreadlocks”, Mohawks, uneven haircuts, and wild hair colors.  The other woman Jackie Sherril told WJLA of DC that she worked there last summer and they issued a rehire only if she changed her hairstyle.  WTF?!

I do not understand why an amusement park that allows all colors, shapes, sizes into the theme park would discriminate HAIR.  Hair these days are expressive and one should not be judged by the strand of their hair, especially for a minimum wage job.  Since forever locs have been dreaded in the corporate world but you would think a small summer job would cut some slack and allow their staff to wear their hair as they please.  I guess this means all the women who are shaving their hair shaved off to look like Rhianna and Amber Rose are out of a job at Six Flags of America.  Their Policies need to be re-evaluated because we are reaching 2011, and I know that THEY know everyone is keeping up with the latest looks, so if it’s not locs, every other girl is rocking a Mohawk, shaved head, short do, or funky colors.  Also, the Maryland and DC area are quite trendy with their natural hair and locs just like the Bay Area are worn freely amongst African Americans.  As a woman with Natural Hair myself, I have confidence  when it comes to the career and job that I want. So I really do fear for the corporate world and “Six Flags” that plan to discriminate on natural hair because I will be coming full force.  What do you think about this issue?  Should these two women be filing a lawsuit?  Is this borderline a racial issue?

Uncle Funky’s Daughter Presents. . .

I stumbled upon yet another product to get your curls bouncing.  Uncle Funky’s Daughter “Curly Magic”.  It’s an all natural, Silicone free product that is used on kinky and curly textured hair to defined the curls.  By using the shingling method it will give you elongated curls.  Now I just got a bottle of Kinky Curly that I stay faithful to but I will be trying this product out to see how it treats my hair.  If it works for you PLEASE let us know 😉

You Want to Go Natural?

I have been getting alot of questions and comments about going natural and I always ask first, what do YOU want to do?  I chopped all of my hair off 2 years ago and started from scratch but there are other ways of riding yourself from the toxins and chemicals to bring back your natural glow.  My question this week is which would you prefer: Transitioning or The Big Chop?

What is transitioning? Getting rid of all those chemicals, stopping the creamy crack nursing your hair back to natural health slowly, without chopping it all off.

Afro Chic’s Tip: Don’t Comb Your Hair?!?

Okay so you can comb it, but never when it’s DRY!  I’ve noticed that you get your most definition when your hair is wet, so after I give my mane a good washing I run my comb through with conditioner; Loreal Nature’s Therapy Mega Strength Fortifying Conditioner once a week and I don’t comb my hair as much afterwards.  This may sound crazy but when you have an afro pik and some fingers there is no need to continuously comb through your hair every day.  You will lose definition and get that scarey frizzy afro that we all try to avoid.  Daily I spritz my hair with Elasta Care Moisturing Spray and dap on their Feels like Silk Gel to keep it soft and healthy. So my tip for you is lay off all that combing and brushing and let the curl do it’s own thing 😉

Who gives it to ya more?!

The other night while in the club I caught this woman staring at me, I thought maybe I had spinach in my teeth so I ran to the bathroom to check my face.  She followed me in there and I almost freaked out until she opened her mouth and said, “I love your hair!” This whole time I thought she was mean mugging me but she politely told me that she liked how I rocked my hair.  The compliment felt good but I wonder, would a brotha do all that to give a compliment?  I want to know what you are thinking, take my poll and let’s see!

My Appreciation

This is my dedication and appreciation for all the sistahs out there with rebellious hair. Where ever I go no matter what state, what country, use the compliments uplift eachother.  I don’t know if anyone understands me, but once you’ve experience the natural lifestyle it’s not like no other.  No lacefront, remy weave, or bone straight lifestyle can’t take away the shine that magically seems to glow between each sending happiness that only the rebellious can understand.  I have recently noticed the natural community and how on such a forbiden and touchy subject women of all textures come together through internet, on the streets, or work enviornments and uplift eachother when society only wants to bring us down.  This is me appreciating those that give compliments, advice, or just slient gestures to those who choose to wear their hair how it has been naturally rooted from the scalp.  Even if it’s just one day, one hour, or a couple months, just remember we are born natural and I will continue to live this natural life 🙂

More for your curl: Mizani True Textures

Mizani hair products have been used on my hair in salons in the south and I have been extremely happy with the results when my hair was chemically processed.  Their new line “True Textures” are now for naturally curly hair styles.  They have been advertised in Essence Magazine for Mizani’s Curl Community on www.essence.com I love their holding spray but the products that stood out to me were Mizani’s true textures Moisture Stretch Curling Cream and Perfect Curl Spray

This cream is good for the tight curl pattern, It really doesnt build and lock in moisture so you don’t walk around with a dry fro.

I havent tried this but I’m curious to know how it is on looser curl textures.  Everyone’s hair is different so try them out and tell me what you think!

Afro Chic’s Pic: Trey Songz “Yo Side of the Bed”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been emotional over a music video but Trey Songz did it to me.  Just released from “Yo Side of the Bed” plays a little tribute to the families and couples in the military and the trails and heartache that one can have from it.  It will definitely give some waterworks and make you think about your own relationships.  Enjoy!
