The Winter Shampoo

The humidity has officially left us and it’s time to figure out how we are going to keep our moisturized.  I have the pleasure of re-introducing you to Optimum Care Oil Therapy: Ultimate Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner.   I was asked a few times these past couple of weeks of what I use to wash my hair in the winter-time and I can only recommend what works best for my natural dry hair.

Soft Sheen Carson are very good products that you can find at any store that has a “black hair” section. Honestly, you don’t have to order online and seek a bunch of organic material just to find shampoo that will feel your natural hair. Hope it works for ya 🙂

Twist Outs with Miss Jessie’s

I have been looking for a product to do my twist-outs with and I think this is the one.  It doesnt beat kinky-curly but when it comes to a wash and twist, you are good to go.

My Simple Steps:

1. Wash and condition your hair really well.  Comb through your tangles under running water to reduce breakage and save time.

2. towel dry hair and section off your hair into four sections

3. Use a rat tooth comb to section small pieces of your hair to two-strand twist.  Place a dime sized amount onto your fingers and smoth it on the small section then two-strand twist. Repeat until you finish the whole head.

p.s. you might want to re-wet your hair from time to time to lock in moisture.

Lastly, when your hair is completely dry you unravel each twists and style.

Bald-Head Complex Is In

This fall I have noticed a lot of bald-headed women running around here. It’s not the “bald-headed scallywags” but more of the chick that just decided to cut their locks off and rely on their face.  Pretty faces I see, but as a survivor of the big cut, I too know the exhilirating feeling of chopping thy hair off.

I want to take the time to commend Solange Knowles for her Bald-Head complex.  I do know what made her do it, but I can tell you its one of the two things. 1) She was weaving herself away from her big sister Queen of the Lacefront aka Beyonce. I don’t blame her though, I mean poor Solange is only known because of her. 2) She probably didnt have too much hair to begin with. And usually women who want to get rid of their weaves and wigs will just chop everything off. Nothing is wrong with that, but at least she’s not frontin. You feel me?

Now, I don’t think Solange has a very STRONG face for a bald-head nor does she have the confidence, but if she uses some “smize” she might pull it off and the confidence can be found.  Oh yeah, props for the Honey Mag Cover. (stole it from her twitter icon, thanks lol)

Kink Curly Curling Custard

I discovered this product last year during my transitions stage, I believe my hair was an inch or so and I wanted to do something with my hair.  It wasnt working with just the wash and go, and there was perm still left on my ends.  I was on youtube one day, and came across millions of videos on “Kinky Curly Curling Custard”.

Curling

Don’t fret.  This is not a jerry-curl activating solution you can find at your local beauty supply.  The asians arent allowed to carry these natural hair producats.  This bottle is about $25 dollars and you can find it online. I’ts a good investment though, trust me.

You are to wash your hair and condition it then when its soaking wet, you apply the custard to your hair and finger it through. After that, you let it air dry for the time being and voila! Managable curls you never knew you had.

“Good Hair” Documentary by Chris Rock

I know I’m not the only one anxiously awaiting the premiere of the “Good Hair” documentary done by Chris Rock that was the award winner for the Sundance Film Festival of 2009.  The African-American culture has and will always have a struggle with HAIR. No matter if its long, straight, nappy, or curly, there will alway be the question as to “What is Good hair?”

I do NOT want to simply answer this question for you or rant on about my opinions yet because I realize that I have done plenty of blogs, outbursts, and discussion on “Good Hair” but I want to see what angles Chris Rock is going to take on this situation.  I hope that he doesnt just gear to the creamy-crack users but always the black women with natural hair as well.  How do women with natural hair feel about “good hair”? How is it defined to them? and why did they choose to stay/ or go natural?

I came across a youtuber by the name of leobody05 and she gives her opinion, which I have mad respect for, from already viewing the movie:

Now’s a good time to give my definition of Good Hair:

Good Hair is hair that is healthy and well taken care of.  Typically good hair is categorized as hair free of damage and split-ins.  It is not hair that is just long and straight, because most of the time, a persons hair that is super long is not HEALTHY i.e split ins, and uneven.

My Secret to my Soft

Usually I wouldnt do this but I have been asked many times what products I use to compliment my curl pattern.  The two products that I use daily are called “Elasta Care Penetrating Moisturizer” and “Elasta Care Feels like Silk Gel”. I found out about Elasta Care through my friend Heather who was in beauty school. I wanted to rock the curly summer look without loosing my “out the shower” curls.

Feels Like Silk Styling Gel

The secret to this particular styling Gel is that you do not have to apply it when just get out the shower.  I would only use a dime-sized amount spread it on my palms, then run my fingers through my hair. The silky feelings is blam and my hair never gets that unwanted snow storm after using it either.

Elasta Care Penetrating Moisturizer

The key to healthy hair is MOISTURE. I cannot stress enough how I hate when my hair is dry and brittle.  Especially with kinky hair its not a good look to have a brittle pad on your head.  After washing my hair and when its wet, I like to apply it just to hold in the water moisture.  I’m telling you now, this moisturizer will last weeks and leave your hair feelings sooooo soft.

HU is going NATURAL

As I walk through the halls and eat in the cafeterias I notice something different about my peers.  All this natural, big and beautiful hair surrounds me.  Girls with fros, locks, and twists are seen around campus.

I am loving this fall because It is the first time I am being more appreciative of my hair and its existence.  However, my natural process has been a lot easier when I meet and talk to different women who have decided to go natural as well.  I could sit anywhere on campus, alone, and I will become approached and appreciated for my naturality.

I do realize that there is no comparison between the two, but the whole idea that women are being more appreciative of what God has given them has been SPRINKLED throughout the campus….

Make sure that you exploit your creativity and if you feel like you want to go natural or dare to be different, do NOT second guess yourself because it will never happen.  It just makes me happy every day to see women at Hampton University embrasing their natural beauty and I thought I would share that with the world.

So happy, how about you?
