Todays is June 16 which marks the day that a true legend was born, Tupac Shakur. What may be reminiscent for many of his fans is a time of appreciation for me. For so long I have appreciated Tupac as an artist, his lyrics, charisma, and leadership has never been duplicated in the music industry til this day. The messages he sent reached a wordly audience from the ghettos to the school houses, he was a genius at his craft. The song and lyrics that stood out to me in my mind and what I stick by always is “Keep Ya Head Up” which directed to the ladies and the issues we go through with men, family, babies, and life. I love how Tupac never leaves out women in his music, he tries to teach a lesson through his own. To this day, I wish that some of my black brothas out there will not be so disrespectful and judgemental to the creators of their children, knowing that the whole world is on their shoulders. but in this world today that’s too much right.
Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice
I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots
I give a holler to my sisters on welfare
Tupac cares, if don’t nobody else care
And uhh, I know they like to beat ya down a lot
When you come around the block brothas clown a lot
But please don’t cry, dry your eyes, never let up
Forgive but don’t forget, girl keep your head up
And when he tells you you ain’t nuttin don’t believe him
And if he can’t learn to love you you should leave him
Cause sista you don’t need him
And I ain’t tryin to gas ya up, I just call em how I see em
You know it makes me unhappy (what’s that)
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it’s time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don’t we’ll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can’t make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you’re fed up ladies, but keep your head up
[Chorus]
Keep ya head up, oooo child things are gonna get easier
ooooo child things’ll
get brighter [2x]
Aiyyo, I remember Marvin Gaye, used to sing ta me
He had me feelin like black was tha thing to be
And suddenly tha ghetto didn’t seem so tough
And though we had it rough, we always had enough
I huffed and puffed about my curfew and broke the rules
Ran with the local crew, and had a smoke or two
And I realize momma really paid the price
She nearly gave her life, to raise me right
And all I had ta give her was my pipe dream
Of how I’d rock the mic, and make it to tha bright screen
I’m tryin to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
It’s hard to be legit and still pay tha rent
And in the end it seems I’m headin for tha pen
I try and find my friends, but they’re blowin in the wind
Last night my buddy lost his whole family
It’s gonna take the man in me to conquer this insanity
It seems tha rain’ll never let up
I try to keep my head up, and still keep from gettin wet up
You know it’s funny when it rains it pours
They got money for wars, but can’t feed the poor
Say there ain’t no hope for the youth and the truth is
it ain’t no hope for tha future
And then they wonder why we crazy
I blame my mother, for turning my brother into a crack baby
We ain’t meant to survive, cause it’s a setup
And even though you’re fed up
Huh, ya got to keep your head up
[Chorus]
And uhh
To all the ladies havin babies on they own
I know it’s kinda rough and you’re feelin all alone
Daddy’s long gone and he left you by ya lonesome
Thank the Lord for my kids, even if nobody else want em
Cause I think we can make it, in fact, I’m sure
And if you fall, stand tall and comeback for more
Cause ain’t nuttin worse than when your son
wants to kno why his daddy don’t love him no mo’
You can’t complain you was dealt this
hell of a hand without a man, feelin helpless
Because there’s too many things for you to deal with
Dying inside, but outside you’re looking fearless
While da tears, is rollin down your cheeks
Ya steady hopin things don’t fall down this week
Cause if it did, you couldn’t take it, and don’t blame me
I was given this world I didn’t make it
And now my son’s getten older and older and cold
From havin the world on his shoulders
While the rich kids is drivin Benz
I’m still tryin to hold on to my survivin friends
And it’s crazy, it seems it’ll never let up, but
please… you got to keep your head up
Tank is so underrated and I can’t seem to wonder why. He’s not your typic R&B artist, but thugs can sing to. Check out his new single “Sex Music”. I’m sure there is a video coming soon, and I will be posting it. Enjoy!

Eminem’s music is always so ANGRY. I like the song “Love the Way You Love Me” maybe because it features Rhianna who adds just a subtle innocence to his ANGRY song. So for all the Eminem fans, your boy is back!

Lemme take you underground for a minute, to the soul songstress that’s been out since 2008, but hiding in 2010. Her name is Teisha Marie and her song is “Addicted to Life”. Born in England, raised in Maryland, She always had a passion in music. She attended Spelman College (HBCU pride) and studied Music History. I think she mastered it quite well. She reminds me of a cross from Jill Scott meets Goapole. Her other current songs are out there: “Awaken” and “More Important”. You’re probably just thinking that I like her hair, yes I do but I also love her voice. Keep her on the look out for something hot in future!

I’m tired of watching the news and seeing progress that could’ve been handled so differently, but because I am not of in the oval office I must sit back and let it happen. Recently the Gulf Coast erupted with a Oil Spill that had leaked into the ocean and has cause a disaster to many communities, beaches, people, and natural landmarks. Coast Guard needs to take extra responsibility and act on this like it were serious. I’d hate to through Hurricane Katrina in the mix, but I feel it’s just repeat. Why are we sitting back watching the oil spill into our water? I don’t want to live in this mess, Obama needs to get it together and add it at the top of his list. I hate to see that people are losing business and the whole Gulf Coast is suffering yet again from a disaster that wasn’t their fault. I do believe that media is controlling the information given out and I want to know what’s really going on down there. Drilling holes for oil is already bad enough for the environment, maybe this nature’s way of payback and it sucks.

The newest Weight Watchers Spokeswoman Jennifer Hudson has lost a tremendous amount of weight and looks so great! I think she is at a great size 6 and appears to be healthy. Even though she was intending to lose weight for a movie role, it turned out to be a great lifestyle change for her.

Hudson shares her weight loss story and tips in the latest People’s magazine with awesome pictures as evidence that anyone can lose the weight. She has officially motivated me this summer to get off the couch and change my life. The Afro Chic approves!

As I complete my tenure year at what I feel like HU is the “black IV league”, Yale University recently admitted Connecticut Quadruplets Kenny, Martina, Ray, and Carol Crouch into the school this coming fall semester. They are known to be the first set of BLACK quaduplets accepted to an IV league college. So what is the big deal? Of course this is a great moment for their family but it is also an achievement for the black community. Young black men and women are getting a well deserved education and it should be praised! I commend these siblings for collectively getting into one of the top colleges in the country. It’s not everyday you find four brothers and sisters that look exactly alike getting into Yale! BLACK POWER AT ITS BEST!
With jazz as her inspiration, Anya Sippen, draws a picture of her life. I met her in my creative writing class this semester and was immediately pulled into her creative talent. Not only is she an excellent writer but her ability to put sound, rythmn, and music into a visual piece of art is what makes her stand out.
Anya is an North Carolina native who originally became an art Major at Hampton University. The lack of expression the curriculum limited her to enabled her to change her major to Broadcast Journalism but she still aspiring and continuing to be an artist.
“I’m not really into alot of music but I like to listen to old school Jazz,” says Anya of her passion for the art of Jazz artists like Nina Simone, her favorite. She does her artwork on cardboard canvases using oil pastels and acrylic paints.
Anya carries her passion with jazz not only into her art but also through the school radio station 88.1 fridays from 1-2 pm “Mary Helen’s Lunchtime Concert”. I’ve learned from being in class with her that she is crafting her memoir from experiences in Mexico. I knew that summer meant alot to her just by the surrounding photographs and culture that she uniquely displayed in her room as memories.
(Talking about her journal filled with a plethora of pictures, maps, and writing from her summer in Mexico)
(Nina Simone)
Anya’s freedom of expression requires no techniques (pure talent) and is an example of the many talented artists that I come across through my lifetime. She hopes to one day get her memoir published as well as her art displayed in galleries. Please lookout for her!
Erykah Badu aired her music video for “Window Seat” which stirred up alot of thinking processes for many this weekend. Over twitter @fatbellybella she told us that she had less than an hour to do the video and when she got butt naked she had to run like hell afterwards. I thought this video sent out a perfect message about “Group Think”; defined as not individual, narrow minded, and pretty much how are society operates today. She went against the grain and was sending out a message in the most simplest way possible. If you look beyond her naked stroll of downtown Dallas you too will understand the message, but then again maybe you wont. Enjoy!
p.s. What is your opinion/critique on the music video? Please share.
I came across an article today on hufington post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/yolanda-young/swirl-love-hurl-love-why-_b_467268.html that had a very catchy title, black women, learning, and Kardasians were all three of the words that stookdout to me. It tickled my soul to know that the other Yolanda Young would write a book about black women not being able to keep their black men. To be honest its 2010, and I’m tired of this interracial dating contravery, date who you want to but don’t blame anyone else but yourself. I am not going to sit here and compare myself to Kim Kardasian because for one, I will not make myself famous by sucking some D-list celebrity (Ray-J) penis and have some mandigo fetish just to capture some black man. If it wasn’t for Kim her family would not be as “successful” if I must say so myself, and Khloe is just known by association.
So there you have it, Black men are the most hated and wanted in America, and it so happens that White women want themselves a piece. There are plenty of men who appreciate their own race and want to marry themselves a black woman so having this whole ordeal about taking lessons from white women so we can keep our men, is not going to cut it for me. We as black women need to stop worrying about what white men are doing, and worry about what we need to do to better ourselves for ourselves….and the men? they will always be there.
