Afro Chic’s #nowplaying Higher Than This

I recently started to follow @ledisi on twitter and I just wanted to share with you her video for “Higher Than This.” from her latest album.  This chick is so lowkey and i don’t understand why cause her talent is a blessing.

Gold Teeth, Cheap Clothes, and “Short Nappy Hair”

So once I thought Black History Month ended on a good note, I happen to come across some disturbing news that happened in California at UC San Diego.  A White Fraternity thought it would be funny to mock Black History Month by hosting an event called “Compton Cookout” where they would dress up as the many deragatory stereotypes of African Americans, hold up! It doesn’t stop there, they even posted the event on facebook and painted their faces brown.

I am not suprised that they would try to get away with this, the UCSD is 14% black and most of the students are predominately white and have no idea nor do they embrace themselves in African-American culture.  I feel that racism is still prevelant and its at its highest especially being that OUR president is now black.  The most hated race in America is the black race, period.  So many may find it suprising, but I’m not at all.  My brother who attends UC Berkeley which is one of the UC’s known for their protesting, had one today in honor of this ridiculous issue, called THE BLACKOUT.  I wish I was there to witness this because it’s not over.

Just think, if the circumstances of the black race were flipped, white people would not being having it.  What actions should UCSD take? We will soon find out.  But there is NOTHING that will make these kinds of ignorant people understand their wrong doing.

I dont even want to say anymore…Signing off.

Afro Chic enrolls in “Love University”

With Love in the air. . .February is a great time to express your love through music and why not do it with this mixtape done by DJ Marvalous entitled “Love University (Class of Infinity) “

The theme “Love University (Class of Infinity)” is perfect for songs that were compiled to make a harmonizing and rythmically in-tune mixtape.  Selections like Aaliyah “At Your Best”, Musiq Soulchild “Love”, Corrine Baiely Rae, Foreign Exchange, SWV and Lauryn Hill are amongst the many artists that will help you reach your tempos and stimulate your mind and your soul.  I feel that it’s dope that this mixtape has so much versatility and only brings happiness to this Love weekend also known as Valentine’s Day.  So kick back and take lessons at “Love University” with the one and only DJ Marvalous.

Say it Loud. . .

I’m Black and I’m Proud!

just thought I’d celebrate Afros which started in the 1960’s, nothing has really changed, just evolved. I feel as though Afros were more appreciated back in this era than today.  It’s an act of liberation, free yourself and your hair from society. I still remember my mom’s can of afro sheen spray and the afro pik that she passed onto me last summer; That day marked my own freedom.  Whether your hair is straight, kinky, or curly you can too appreciate a hair moment in  Black History.

For my chics in Transition. . .

Lately I’ve noticed some young ladies having a hard time with their hair. I get comments like “I dont wanna get a perm” but then they try to rock a style with their own hair even though they know their hair can’t possibly do all of that.  My theory is there is NO need to fry your hair to shreds (especially if your hair is not healthy enough) just to achieve a hairstyle that can be instantly done in minutes.  And you wonder how can that be?  WIGS!  Don’t shy away from this subject because you will soon find out how left out you are and how man women walk around today with wigs on their head; including stars like Beyonce.  So if you find yourself in a rutt don’t resort to the creamy crack just yet, a nice hair piece or wig can bring you back from the grave and hide your transitional hair until you learn to manage it.

I have puchased two wigs by Equal brandname….

and the Straight. (no personal pic yet)

Some days you just have to let your own hair rest…so instead of everyone seeing your bad hair day, just pop on your instant fab!

Sade pleases the Afro Chic.

It took her 10 years, but Sade is back and is ready to fill your speakers on those rainy cloudy days.  Her soft tones and mystical melodies are showcased in her highly anticipated album “Soldier of Love” which will debut Feb. 9th.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day…

10 tracks were lyrically created to flow from one sound to another and from your heartbeat to your mind.  I found myself completely lost in my thoughts as I gazed out the window listening to the percussion and chimes as well as the lyrics that she was giving me.  My favorite song is called “The Moon and the Sky” and it talked about an admiration a lover has for someone that cant be explained or shown…its now added into my writer’s block playlist, thankyou.

Sade is back to take on the contemporary scene and will continue to give music lovers a reason to be pleased.

The Red Lip.

I found this old picture I took of myself in my bathroom when I was scared to actually leave this house with lipstick on, but now its time to put my shiny lip gloss to rest and add some color to my lips.  I have recently purchased a MAC lipcolor called “Morracan”. It doesn’t look like this throwback pic above  but below its surely represents me well. I feel that as I grow into a woman I learn new things that I can do with my beauty that God has given me.

“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. Or a thick-ass red lipstick”

New Products: Ion & Mango and Lime

So I’ve recently got my hair dyed a red/burgundy color and I decided to share with you guys the new shampoo and products I’ve switched over to.  With my hair type, it has always loved moisture, but even more so that I have now chemically treated my virgin tresses. So same routine, different products!

Ion Color Defense Shampoo- It give great results especially for locking in a long lasting hair color.  Inexpensive, it can be found at Sally’s Beauty Supply.  If you use alot of other products in your hair it will complete wash it out as well as add a shine to your wet hair.

Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel- Don’t be fooled by the rastafarian, cause I surely was when my hairdresser decided to apply this to my hair.  this Gel works as a hair moisturizer that also holds styles. It works great for a twist-out. Trust me! Section and two-strand your wet hair, sit under the dryer, then viola!  It’s always great for retwisting of locs as well!
