#ThingsBlackGirlsDo

I’m not surprised to find twitter taking trending topics too far but I do find it ironic how during this season of “Black Girls Rock” and “For Colored Girls” someone thought it was a good idea to start a topic #ThingsBlackGirlsDo and flip it around to something so ignorant and low-life. And with all honesty, I was offended.  I was too busy Rockin’ as a black girl to have time to blast y’all on the issue, but my fellow HU Alumna, Dana Womack, did a perfectly good job using why she rocks to give the world her original piece in lue of the hate. Take a listen!

“Four Women” on #BlackGirlsRock 2010

The past couple of days has been the spotlight for Black women all over celebrating, remembering, honoring the lives and reasons why black girls rock.  I was going to do a review on the Tyler Perry film “For Colored Girls” but I figured that there are enough depressing reviews that will cover my feelings for the rest of the week.  The 5th Annual Black Girls Rock awards aired on BET this past Sunday and it was one of the best black recognitions that I witnessed (from my hotel room). The best part was indeed the performance by Kelly Price, Marsha Ambriosus, Jill Scott, and Ledisi who are the powerhouses in soul music.  They did a cover of Nina Simone’s “Four Women” which tells a story of four stereotypes of African American women and their struggles.  While many were just blown away by their voices I feel that the concept made perfect sense for the evening and the strength, power, and wisdom leaked tremendously from the voices of the women.  Here are the lyrics, the cover from BET, and a Nina Simone Original. Enjoy!

My skin is black
My arms are long
My hair is wooly
My back is strong
Strong enough to take the pain
Its been inflicted again and again
What do they call me
My name is AUNT SARAH
My name is Aunt Sarah

My skin is yellow
My hair is long
Between two worlds
I do belong
My father was rich and white
He forced my mother late one night
What do they call me
My name is SIFFRONIA
My name is Siffronia

My skin is tan
My hairs alright, its fine
My hips invite you
And my lips are like wine
Whose little girl am I?
Well yours if you have some money to buy
What do they call me
My name is SWEET THING
My name is Sweet Thing

My skin is brown
And my manner is tough
Ill kill the first mother I see
Cos my life has been too rough
Im awfully bitter these days
because my parents were slaves
What do they call me
My
name
is
PEACHES

Chrisette Michele x I’m a Star (video)

Check out Chrisette Michele’s video for “I’m a Star”  I’m anticipating her 3rd album Let Freedom Reign which will hit stores November 30th. Yay for R&B!

Raheem DeVaughn x Bedroom (Video)

Raheem Devaughn released his video “Bedroom” weeks ago but it took me a minute to watch the full version and all I can think about was AMAZING. The director, Tabi Bonney did an amazing job at portraying this song in such a classy yet sensual way.  I love the are and still photography that it makes.   It you stop the video anywhere, you would get a good snapshot.  That’s how videos are supposed to be.  Nonetheless, Raheem Devaughn is one of the best underrated artists out right now.  His musicality is genius and that’s all that matters. Right?

Eric Benet- Sometimes I Cry (Video)

Check out Eric Benet’s video to “Sometimes I Cry”, I’m not a big fan of him ever since he broke up with Halle, but that’s my personal issue.  He gets mad props for his leading lady for having a natural brown skin sistah.  That’s a two for one deal right there! Enjoy!

Willow Smith – Whip My Hair (Official Video)

Willow Smith video for “Whip My Hair” has been the buzz all day. Having grown women secretly whipping their hair at work to a 9-year-old girl. I love this video because it’s so appropriate for her age and style. Not to mention, in the end there was some vogue action that I love. Whip my hair!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Sesame Street’s “I Love My Hair”

I think this video so adorable, I’m happy that Sesame Street continues to uplift children in many ways with education and self-image.  It was adorable to see the lil fro puppet dancing around. What a fun sing-a-long.  Sesame Street better be around for me little ones.

I had to share this with you all, thanks to Hanae for showing us.

Essence Goes Natural: November Issue 2010
